Welcome to Teaching 2.0

For some time, Internet users have been referring to some of the new and emerging web technologies as Web 2.0. Here is a definition of Web 2.0 from Wikipedia:

"Web 2.0 is a term often applied to a perceived ongoing transition of the World Wide Web from a collection of websites to a full-fledged computing platform serving web applications to end users. Ultimately Web 2.0 services are expected to replace desktop computing applications for many purposes." [See the entire WikiPedia article for an excellent discussion of Web 2.0 technologies and trends.]

Central to the concept of Web 2.0 is the idea of social networking. Most of the Web 2.0 applications include the ability to share results, connect with colleagues or readers, share content across various applications, and comment on or even edit content posted by others--connectivity and convergence are key to working with and understanding Web 2.0.

It stands to reason that teaching in a Web 2.0 context is or will be very different than traditional teaching. Students--those in public schools as well as those in post-secondary institutions--are developing their learning styles and learning preferences in environments where immediacy, connectivity, and self-directed learning dominate. This gives rise to the question "What does Teaching 2.0 look like?"

The goal of this site is to gather ideas and input toward developing a definition of Teaching 2.0.

A Place to Start

Teaching in a post-secondary school of education presents some unique challenges. We must be concerned with methodology and pedagogy not only in terms of the pre-service teachers that we teach, but also in terms of the K-12 students that they will instruct in their careers.

With that in mind, let's start developing these two domains of Teaching 2.0:

  1. Characteristics: The teaching and learning behaviors that we might expect to see in a teacher (K-12 and/or post-secondary) who has embraced the concept of Teaching 2.0
  2. Tools: Web 2.0 (and other) tools that enhance instruction in a Teaching 2.0 environment
